Veteran Telugu actor-comedian Gundu Hanumantha Rao passes away

Gundu Hanumantha Rao was well known for his comic timing. His most memorable work, however, is the TV series called Amrutam.

Well-known Telugu comedian Gundu Hanumantha Rao died early on Monday in Hyderabad, The Hindu reported. He was 61.

The report, quoting family sources, said the actor was suffering from kidney ailments and passed away at his home at around 3am. He is survived by a son.

Rao was born in Vijayawada on October 10, 1956. He started out with theatre, making his debut at a young age with a play called Ravana Brahma in Vijayawada.

He got his first major break with Aha Naa Pellanta, a film released in 1987. In the Jandhyala-directed film, Rao played the groom’s father who was hard of hearing.

The actor went on to work in nearly 400 films including Pellaniki Premalekha Priyuraliki Subhalekha, Rajendradu Gajendradu, Mayaloodu, Nenu Seetamahalakshmi, Kedi No 1, Apparao Driving School, Kalyanam and Original.

However, it was the TV series Amrutam that earned him an iconic stature and three Nandi awards.

According to News Minute, Rao’s last rites are likely to be performed at Erragadda Burial Ground in Hyderabad’s SR Nagar.
