, flashy tops, even capris - Gen Y mothers and daughters are sporting the same style. And even as wardrobes get raided (from either side) we find out what are the shared sentiments on this issue.
Jeetender Gill, researcher in popular culture, cites the reason for this urban phenomenon, "Media is the major reason for this drastic makeover in mothers. Almost every TV serial has a young actress playing a mother, wearing fashionable clothes. Greater acceptance of popular culture has also contributed to it all."
Udit Dhawan, a first year student of BBA is happy that his mum can carry off a pair of jeans. He says, "My friends say that my mother, looks more like my elder sister That acceptance from my friends means, I can throw frequent parties at home." But the idea doesn't go down well with Kriti Srivastay, an MBA aspirant.
"The way she would not like me to wear a bikini, similarly I wouldn't feel comfortable seeing her in 'denims'. Moreover, it's not socially very acceptable." Dr Sameer Parikh, psychiatrist, Max Healthcare, has dealt with cases where mothers of teenagers have said that they meet with resistance from their own children when they don sportier, younger attire.
The message is clear - act your age. "The kids tell their parents not to come to social dos in certain western clothes. Reason: they don't want their classmates and peers to pass comments. Adds Parikh, "Our society is still in transition. There are many kids who would not welcome this makeover in their parents. Social background coupled with upbringing are also some of the factors that determine this attitude. But gradually this will become a norm than an exception."
