RIO DE JANEIRO: Woman archer L. Bombayla Devi was the only bright spot in another dismal day for India at the Olympics on Wednesday. She advanced into the 1/8 Eliminations round, beating Taipei’s Shih-Chia Lin 108-101 after first winning the 1/32 elimination round. Shooter Jitu Rai, judoka Avtar Singh and weightlifter Satish Shivalingam crashed out of their respective disciplines. The women’s hockey team, appearing in the Games for the first time in 36 years, were thrashed 1-6 by Australia in the pool phase. Jitu finished 12th in the 50m pistol qualification round. Shivalingam crashed out of the 77kg elimination round, only managing to lift a total of 329 kg. Avtar lost to Popole Misenga of the Refugee Olympic Team in judo’s 90kg elimination Round of 32. On Thursday, India shuttler begin their campaign in the group stages while the men’s hockey team face a Dutch test.
