MUMBAI: Former champions Mumbai Customs and Union Bank of India (UBI) powered away to emphatic victories over Central Railway Mumbai Division and West Zone United respectively in their opening round matches of the Mumbai District Football Association’s Independence Cup tournament at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel, on Sunday. While Deepak Irmali struck a hat-trick for Customs’ 5-0 win, UBI’s great team effort saw them post a 6-0 win.

In contrast, Central Bank of India and Kenkre FC made it to the quarterfinals after close wins over Millat FC and Young Boys respectively. The stars in both the matches, Nadeem Khan, for CBI, and Athang Kanekar, for Kenkre, both struck a brace each.

1st round: UBI 5 (Rohel Shaikh, Leander Dharmai, Vinod Kumar Pandey, Md Ishaq Shaikh, Digvijay Yadav) bt West Zone Utd 0; CBI 2 (Nadeem Khan 2) bt Millat 1 (Asif Khan); Mumbai Customs 6 (Deepak Irmali 3, Hekmat Singh, Ashrafali Makandar, Jinto Jose) bt CRMD 0. Kenkre 2 (Athang Kanekar 2) beat Young Boys 0.

GAURAV DEFEATS NEIL

Gaurav Panchangam managed to pull off an exciting 9-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-6, 14-12 win over Neil Mulye to clinch the midget boys’ title in the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana’s 3rd Maharashtra State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament at JVPG on Sunday.

Other noteworthy champions of the day included Jennifer Varghese in the midget girls’ section, Swastika Ghosh and Deepit Patil in the sub-junior division and Pritha Vartikar and Rajveer Shah who claimed top honours in the cadet category.

KHEDEKAR ADVANCES

Rajesh Khedekar hit back after losing the opening board and scored a black slam in his 15-25, 25-18, 25-1 win over Akhtar Shaikh in men’s second round of the 52nd Maharashtra State and Inter-District Carrom Championship at Thane.
