MUMBAI: The rule allows a player eight seconds to score in a shootout. India claimed Daniel Beale was allowed 14 seconds for Australia’s second attempt before the video umpire ordered a retaking for an infringement by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. It was converted.
India filed a protest against the extra time given to Beale, which was rejected. In a statement on Saturday, FIH said the infringement took place within the stipulated eight seconds and its decision was correct. However, it said nothing about the extra seconds allowed to the Aussie attacker.
“The umpires have failed. The shootout attempt went on for over 14 seconds, and then it was re-taken. Just to cover up their shortcomings, they are now pointing at a different incident,” Hockey India president Narender Batra said in London.
“If the goalkeeper had made an infringement, a penalty stroke should have been awarded,” said Batra.
