Fanai, Udanta join Mumbai City FC

MUMBAI: Mumbai City FC announced the signing of the talented Indian pair of Lalchhuanmawai Fanai and Udanta Singh for the third season of Indian Super League (ISL) 2016.
Fanai made his debut with Shillong Lajong before joining Bengaluru FC. Joining his Bengaluru FC teammate at Mumbai City FC is Udanta Singh, who started his football career at the Tata Football Academy, which he represented at the Darjeeling Gold Cup and Saras Gold Cup.
Commenting on the selection, Mumbai City FC CEO Indranil Das Blah said: “We are elated to announce the signing of Fanai and Udanta. Fanai proved his mettle last season as well, and we’re glad to have him back with us. Udanta had a great season in the I-League and is one of the most promising players in the country right now. His continued inclusion in the national squad at such a young age is a testament to that. We are sure they’re going to play a big part in the upcoming season.”
CHIKKARANGAPPA, RASHID SHARE LEAD
AHMEDABAD: Bengaluru’s Chikkarangappa S and Delhi’s Rashid Khan lived up to their reputation of being the tournament favourites at the PGTI Ahmedabad Masters presented by Kalhaar Blues & Greens, as they began the week with first round scores of fiveunder-67 to be the joint leaders on Tuesday.
Defending champion Khalin Joshi, another Bengalurean, and Patna-based rookie Aman Raj and Jaipur’s Vishal Singh shared the third spot as they trailed the leaders by one stroke..
Bengaluru’s Udayan Mane and Mhow’s Om Prakash Chouhan were tied sixth after rounds of three-under-69.
ALL EYES ON DEBORAH WITH SAHIL INJURED
NEW DELHI: India suffered a huge blow ahead of the third edition of the Track Asia Cup, starting here on Wednesday, with world No 6 cyclist Sahil Kumar being ruled out due to an injury.
Sahil, who had earlier won the Asia Track Cup in Bangkok, suffered the injury during a training camp on Monday.
Although Sahil is ruled out, India will field a comparatively large contingent at the event, which is also the qualifier for World Championship.
All eyes will, however, be on Deborah Herold, who, having suffered an injury last year, still managed to grab five medals. She is expected to win more medals this time around during the tournament, to be held at the Indira Gandhi sports complex velodrome.
Besides India, 11 other countries are taking part in the competition – Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Macau, Malaysia and Pakistan, who had refused to take part last year.
FOUR COIMBATOREANS FOR THAI FENCING EVENT
COIMBATORE: Four city students have been selected to represent India in the Thailand Open Fencing Championship, scheduled from September 16 at Bangkok.
The championship will be held till September 22, team manager V Albert Premukumar, who is also Director of Physical Education of Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) in Coimbatore, said.
The team members are T Tamil Kani (Government College of Technology), M Nivetha and N Sasikala (Both KCT) and A Balaji (PSG College of Technology), he said in a release on Tuesday.
