LONDON: The American owners of Liverpool, one of the most famous teams in English football, are not planning to sell, a senior source at the club said on Sunday, after reports that a Chinese-backed consortium wanted to buy a sizeable stake.

There were no active discussions involving Fenway Sports Group, the Boston-based owners, and the English Premier League club had received no bid, added the source who declined to be named. The source restated the club’s position that its owners would listen to any expressions of interest from potential investors in Liverpool but move forward only with the right partner.

Chinese companies are increasingly interested in buying up stakes in European football clubs not only as good investments but also a way to help President Xi Jinping’s bid to raise the profile of the sport in China.

BARCELONA CONFIRM BRAVO TO CITY DEAL

BARCELONA: Barcelona have confirmed Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo will join Manchester City as soon as the Spanish champions sign a replacement for him.

“We have an agreement in principle with Manchester City for Claudio Bravo. We are waiting for events this week. We will open the door for Claudio when we sign another goalkeeper,” sporting director Robert Fernandez said after the 6-2 win over Real Betis on Saturday.

City manager Pep Guardiola wants to sign Bravo to replace Joe Hart, according to reports, because he doesn’t think the England international fits into his style of play.

BRITON CRUTCHLOW WINS CZECH MOTOGP

BRNO: Britain’s Cal Crutchlow on a Honda took his maiden MotoGP win as he dominated a rain-hit race at Brno in the Czech Republic on Sunday.

Italian legend Valentino Rossi claimed second on his Yamaha after finishing more than seven seconds behind the Briton, ahead of championship leader Marc Marquez on a Honda.

With seven races to go, the result leaves Marquez at the top of the overall standings on 197 points, 53 ahead of Rossi.

Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo dropped to third overall, on 138 points, after finishing 17th at Brno and a lap behind as the victim of a poor strategy.

“We did the best job we could today and I’m really, really pleased for my team,” said the 30-year-old Crutchlow, of the independent LCR Honda team.
