"I am very sad, because I wanted to defend my title," said the 28-year-old, who hopes the rest will allow him to recover for the French Open at Roland Garros which starts in three weeks time.

Gonzalez, ranked 13th in the world, picked up the injury in the semi-finals of Rome's ATP tournament when he lost in two sets to world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain.

Gonzalez had been seeded first, but the tournament still contains former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, now ranked 53rd, who has been invited by the organisers.
