Roger Federer will play the Stockholm Open in October, tournament director Per Hjertquist said Wednesday. "I'm extremely happy," Hjertquist said. "It's the biggest thing for us since Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors used to play in Stockholm."

The tournament is one of the oldest on the ATP Tour and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in the Royal Tennis Hall Oct. 6-12. The top-ranked Federer, who captured his fifth straight Wimbledon title last year and also has won the U.S. Open four times and the Australian Open three times, lost to Sweden's Andreas Vinciguerra in straight sets in his only previous appearance in the Swedish capital in 2000.

Other players committed to the tournament include ninth-ranked David Nalbandian and Swedes Jonas Bjorkman, Thomas Johansson and Robin Soderling.

McEnroe and Boris Becker are the only four-time winners of the indoor tournament.
