Santosh Trophy contenders Manipur sent a strong message to their opponents by demolishing Rajasthan 13-0 in their Cluster IV qualifying match at Barasat Stadium on Friday. Former Churchill Brothers midfielder Reisangmi Vashum pumped in five goals and former East Bengal striker Subash Singh scored four.
Charan Rai, another player from the Churchill Brothers stable, scored two and Sporting Clube de Goa's Biseshwar Singh chipped in with one. Nilkumar Singh scored the 13th.
Nagaland, too, had a good outing, thrashing Gujarat 4-0 in their Cluster III qualifying match at Howrah Stadium. However, the scoreline did not reflect a combative game where Gujarat were on the verge of scoring but failed. After holding their opponents goalless till the lemon break, Gujarat leaked four goals before the end.
Nagaland used swift passing to break Gujarat's defence. Striker Sakutemjew scored a brace, his first goal coming eight minutes into the second half when staying onside, he overran the defence to latch on to a through ball from Ninaj Babui and slotted home.
In the 77th minute, Nagaland were awarded a penalty when goalkeeper Vizovor tripped Nawdiabonang in the box. Beilie Rio converted the spot-kick to make it 2-0. Having sensed their opponents' desperation to equalise, Nagaland capitalised on lapses to swoop through and score on counterattacks.
In the final minute, substitute Tiasunep trapped a long cross from the left and scored. Two minutes later, Sakutemjew scored his second after a defensive collapse from Gujarat and he had to volley in off Tiasunpe's cross from the right.
