Heavy rain delayed the start of the second day of the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris on Monday.

After only seven of the planned 24 matches were completed on Sunday, organisers were facing anothern tussle with the elements with the showers predicted to interrupt play for the rest of the day.

On court, world number one Roger Federer was due to open his campaign to win the only Grand Slam title to elude him when he faces America's Michael Russell.

Sixty-four first round matches were scheduled for Monday.

Rain was also expected to disrupt proceedings throughout Tuesday with temperatures hovering around the 13 degree mark.
