WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is scheduled to undergo brain surgery, with the date now confirmed. On his recent episode of the "Grilling with JR" podcast, Ross announced that he is set to have a shunt inserted on August 12.
He mentioned that he has been informed he will likely only need to stay in the hospital for one day.
However, Ross, who serves as an announcer for AEW, acknowledged that with his contract with the organization expiring this month, he may have already officiated his final match.
Will Jim Ross return to work after brain surgery?
He remains optimistic about the possibility of returning to work and has expressed his desire to attend AEW's "All In" event on August 30 at Wembley Stadium in London, as reported by SB Nation.
“I hope that my ending, my career ending, is planned,” Ross stated. “And so I don’t just show up one Wednesday night on ‘Dynamite’ and say, ‘Well, I got some news for you folks, I’m done.’ That might sound cool and edgy, but I would like to be able to know that I’m leaving. I think that’s important for my psyche. And I don’t know, maybe I’m looking at it wrongly, but in any event, that’s where I’m thinking – just have a good, clean ending.

Regarding his forthcoming surgery, Ross expressed his readiness. “I don’t want to say I’m looking forward to it, but I guess I really am to get to that point and to get it over with,” he stated. “I have never had brain surgery before. So they’re going to put a — what do they call it? A shunt? So, I’m getting a shunt put in my brain.”
Ross recently garnered attention after disclosing that he had an extended hospital stay. “Heading home tomorrow!” he said on X. “Over 30 days in the hospital come to a grateful end. Count your blessings daily.”
A look at Jim Ross's career
The prominent announcer was honored with induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2019, he became the lead commentator and a senior advisor for AEW, a competing promotion.
Throughout his life, Ross has encountered numerous health challenges, including a diagnosis of Bell’s palsy in 1994.
This was succeeded by a diagnosis of skin cancer in 2021, and colon cancer the following year.
More recently, in January, Ross experienced a frightening fall that left him lying on his living room floor for five hours.
Due to his health concerns, Ross has assumed a less prominent position with AEW in recent years.
