One of the most successful women’s doubles teams in recent times parted ways this week when Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza decided that they will no longer be doubles partners.
For some time, Hingis and Mirza have had differences over their mixed doubles run-ins. Hingis partners Leander Paes in mixed while Mirza plays with Croatian Ivan Dodig.
Their last two encounters have been evenly split. While Mirza and Dodig prevailed in the quarters of the Australian Open, Paes and Hingis got their own back by besting them to win the French Open title in a close match.
Sources say Hingis was peeved that Mirza was unhappy after the French loss and that reflected in their interactions.
On Wednesday, Hingis explained on Instagram why the winning partnership ended.
The Indo-Swiss pair began their partnership last March with a bang, winning three titles on the trot — at Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston. Sania and Martina took the number one team ranking when they won the Charleston event, the Indian becoming the top-ranked individual. Sania Mirza claimed her first women’s doubles Grand Slam by winning at Wimbledon 2015 in the company of Martina and later that year, the pair also won the US Open title.

According to reports, Sania will now team up with world No 21 Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic while Martina has teamed up with Coco Vandeweghe of the United States. But the pair will be seen together later this year when they compete in the year-end WTA Finals in Singapore.
