The country’s numero uno singles player, Somdev Devvarman, is confident of winning India a World Group berth in the Davis Cup play-off tie in September.

India have drawn Japan in an away tie, to be held from 16-18 September. Even though India’s overall Davis Cup record against the Japanese stand at 18-3, playing an away tie is never easy.
“We were all hoping for a home tie, drawing Japan in Japan is tough. Beating a team at home always is. But we’re a confident team and hopefully we’ll be able to pull off a win,” said Devvarman on Thursday.
It’s a known fact that the 26-year-old’s favourite surface is hard. “It doesn’t matter what surface I’m hoping to play on. Once we find out, we’ll have to be well prepared to give us a fair chance at winning,” the world No. 65 added.
It should prove to be an even contest because both sides will be fighting hard to enter the 16-team elite group. The second-best team will find itself at the Asia/Oceania Group I Zone.
