“I want to win the I-League as a player, yes you heard that right,” he said, over the phone from Gangtok on Tuesday after United Sikkim FC drew 1-1 against Mohammedan Sporting to qualify for the top tier with ONGC.
Bhutia doesn’t have an I-League trophy and isn’t giving up the quest even though he will be almost 36 when the next edition begins.
Finishing in the top three of I-League 6 is United Sikkim’s target and that’s not all. The former India captain said he wants to win the Federation Cup this year. “I know it’s difficult but it is also possible. You need to set the bar high,” he said.
Set up in 2008, this is the first time a team from Sikkim will play in the I-League’s first division.
