They were already worried after the footballer, who advertises Coca-Cola Powerade in a 600,000 pound-a-year deal, was pictured smoking and urinating in public three months ago.

Bosses at the company's US headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, think the latest allegations are the final straw.

However, the firm's Brit chiefs, who know Rooney's pulling power among his legions of adoring fans, desperately want to keep him.

"Americans cannot fathom the laddish culture that surrounds football,'' the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

Rooney is paid 2.5 pounds million a year from Coca-Cola and other sponsors.
