News app Artifact, launched by Instagram co-founders, gets ability to summarise stories

The tool is AI-driven, and uses OpenAI's technologies to summarise the text, said Artifact in its announcement.

Thanks to a new feature, users of Artifact – a personalised news aggregator launched by Instagram's co-founders in February – can read articles in a summarised form.

According to TechCrunch, which cited the company's official blog post, the tool is artificial intelligence (AI)-driven, and the text summaries are generated with technologies of OpenAI, the San Francisco-based AI research lab that developed the revolutionary ChatGPT.

Here is all you need to know about this feature:

(1.) According to Artifact, the tool gives people the ability to understand the ‘high-level’ points of a story before they read it.

(2.) To access the feature, they must tap the ‘Aa’ button on the menu above an individual article, and then click on the new ‘Summarize’ option.

(3.) To encourage more and more people to use the feature, Artifact is also offering the ability to summarise stories in a particular ‘style.'

(4.) The tool, however, is not meant to replace the practice of reading the full article. “AI is powerful, but it can make mistakes from time to time. So, it is important that the summary matches the article as you read the full text,” the company said.

(5.) The option is still being rolled out. It is, therefore, possible that some users may not immediately see it in their app.
