Setback for BJP in key areas in UP panchayat elections

  • The BJP, which came to power in UP with a landslide in 2017, also lost panchayat seats in western Uttar Pradesh, where anti-incumbency and the ongoing farmer protests against three central agrarian laws dented the party’s fortunes.

Second phase of panchayat polls in Himachal Pradesh today

In the first phase, 1,227 panchayats went to polls on Sunday. Electoral Officer Sanjeev Mahajan said a voter turnout of over 70 per cent was recorded in the first round.

Tamil Nadu man killed for opposing panchayat poll fixing

A Tamil Nadu youth was killed for protesting attempts to fix the election for the post of village panchayat president in a hamlet of Virudhunagar district on Wednesday night. This is the first casualty in the run-up to the December 27 and 30 civic polls for the state’s rural panchayats amidst reports from across the state of panchayat posts being auctioned rendering the polling useless.

Trinamool Congress sweeps panchayat elections at all levels in West Bengal

Till 8 pm, the ruling party had won 19,394 (68%) of the 28,456 gram panchayat seats, the results for which were declared. It also bagged 1,842 (88.34%) of the 2,085 panchayat samiti seats and 62 of the 63 zilla parishad seats declared till then.
