The proposed cuts in pensions range from 25% to 50% of the entitled pension depending on an officer’s length of service at the time of leaving the job.

Coming to the rescue of a man claiming his entitlement for the past 13-years despite having worked with government departments for 32 years, a bench headed by Justices S K Kaul ordered the Kerala government to include the period of service rendered by him as casual workers for determining his pensionary benefits.

The Indian Army’s pensions and salaries alone amount to Rs1.82 lakh crores – a whopping 42 % of the defence budget. This situation is not new, but has continued to grow worse thanks to successive pay commissions, OROP, and India’s inability to reform and rethink the armed forces.

The Centre had on March 7 told the Supreme Court that the entitlement of former MPs to get pension and other benefits was ‘justified’ as their dignity has to be maintained even after they complete their tenure as parliamentarians.
