Mamata meme case: SC order discourages satire and free speech

When courts display an inclination to readily exercise these ¬ suo moto powers to regulate speech that may be considered hostile towards the political class ¬ they engage in viewpoint or content-based discrimination. This is a far cry from their role as protectors of rights, and is also outside the bounds of Article 19(2) of the Constitution.

As a result of the SC order, Diwali was cleaner and healthier but was it as much fun?

By now it was dark and in earlier years the sound of exploding crackers would have been audible. This year there was initial silence. Later there were areas where the Supreme Court order was violated, but nothing like the past.

The SC order on Aravalli is not just about illegal mining

It must trigger a national debate and discussion not just on air pollution but also the rising threat of desertification
The threat of desertification is real for south Haryana, thanks to decrease in open forest cover in Aravalli range the last three decades. This deforestation of the range — which leads to less moisture in air — leads to sand storms and they might get worse if the pace of degradation continues.(REUTERS)

Implement the SC order on Aravallis in letter and spirit

While the financial impact of illegal mining are quantifiable, there are many others such as health, that could have intergenerational impacts. They are, therefore, difficult to measure. But they can be damaging for people and set them back in their lives for a very long time.
The Supreme Court on October 23, 2018, ordered the Rajasthan government to stop illegal mining in a 115.34-hectare area in Aravalli hills within 48 hours after several hills had been razed because of over exploitation(Sonu Mehta/HT PHOTO)

Why the SC order on khaps may not be enough

While the Supreme Court’s order is important, it will not stop attacks on couples altogether. To stop the custom, patriarchal mindsets that view women as property and part of an honour that needs safeguarding, have to change.
Chaudhary Jitendra Singh, the head of the Dhama khap, Haryana. What is equally important is to impress upon these khap panchayats that what they are doing is illegal and it is they, and not the couples, who will face the full force of the law if they overstep the legal boundaries.(HT)
