Rome's top tourist attraction, Sistine Chapel, closes to the public

Tourists to Vatican are being shut out of the Sistine Chapel for the foreseeable future after the death of Pope Francis, which changed Rome’s most iconic site.

Catholic cardinals meeting in Rome on April 28, 2025, agreed to begin on May 7, 2025, the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis, according to ANSA news agency. On Wednesday May 7, the cardinals will take part in a solemn mass at St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, after which those eligible to vote will gather in the Sistine Chapel for the secretive ballot, which can last several days.(AFP)
