Meet the influencer who forced Bournvita to cut sugar

Dec 25, 2023 11:41 AM IST

Revant Himatsingka reviews packaged food items on social media and makes people aware of the ‘companies that sell junk food but market themselves as healthy’.

Influencer Revant Himatsingka is known for reviewing the contents of packaged food products. He went viral in April this year after reviewing the sugar content in Cadbury’s Bournvita. He said that the company should consider changing the tagline from ‘taiyari jeet ki’ to ‘taiyari diabetes ki’. As a result, the company sent a legal notice to Himatsingka and issued a statement addressing the controversy. The company asserted that each serving of Bournvita contains ‘7.5 grams of added sugar,’ which is ‘much less than the daily recommended intake limits of sugar for children’. However, on December 23, the influencer took to Instagram to share that the company has reduced added sugar by 15 percent and called it a ‘big win’.

“Big win! Probably the first time in history that an Instagram reel led to a food giant reducing its sugar content! 1 video resulted in a 15% reduction in sugar. Imagine if all Indians started reading food labels. Companies wouldn’t dare falsely market themselves,” he wrote while sharing a video explaining the timeline of events.

He added, “This fight isn’t against Bournvita. The fight is against any company that sells junk food but markets itself as healthy! The fight is to get 140 crore Indians eating healthier! 1 company changing its sugar content, will result in a chain reaction, and every company will be slightly more careful now.”

But this is not the only product that the influencer reviewed. He earlier reviewed Tang and said that it is ‘nothing but flavoured sugar powder’. “Tang has ~93% sugar! Tang is nothing but flavoured sugar powder. If they limited their marketing to taste, there would be no issue,” wrote Revant Himatsingka while sharing a video on X.

“The problem is they advertise their product as a drink with various vitamins. They also market the drink with a campaign ‘Tang milao, Pani pilao’ to get children to drink more water using Tang. Tang also contains E171 (Titanium Dioxide), an ingredient banned by the EU and several Middle-Eastern countries,” he added.

He even reviewed Maggi and claimed to have seen an ad where Maggi markets its atta noodles as ‘having the fibre of three rotis’. While sharing a video of the review on Instagram, he wrote, “Maggi atta noodles do have atta instead of maida, but all the other additives are very similar to regular Maggi. I don’t recommend people to have atta noodles more than once a month either!”
