Discovery channel is known for its safe and educational content. But this weekend, it will entertain its viewers differently. The channel has produced a one-off special show on a website that instigated some of the biggest controversies of the last few years. Wikileaks: War Lies And Videotape will air on the channel tomorrow at 9 pm.
“It is an in-depth analysis about what goes behind the working of a site,” says Rahul Johri, senior vice president, India, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific.
The investigative show has been directed by Paul Moreira and Luc Hermann, journalists from the French press agency, Premières Lignes. As part of their detailed search for an exclusive insight into the functioning of the site, the duo travelled to London, Paris, Washington and beyond to meet the real people behind Wikileaks.
“The show took about six months to make. During that time these journalists analysed what was goes on in the minds of these officials, how they put things together and how the leak happens,” adds Johri, who feels Discovery has always worked towards disclosure shows. “We had done a show called Jihad in the past, which documented the making of Osama Bin Laden, so shows of this kind are not new for us.” Apart from that, the show has documented a detailed interview of Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, a site that has become synonymous with controversy.
It also includes an interview with the spokesperson of the WikiLeaks team, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, before he opens his own whistle-blower’s website and publishes a novel about his time at the world’s most dangerous website. What many do not know is that the site has no connection with Wikipedia, though until recently, anyone could edit information on WikiLeaks. But now, it works as a traditional publication. A repeat of the show will be aired on Sunday at 10 pm.
