Damian Lewis to appear in Wolf Hall

Wolf Hall centers on Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII's powerful counselor, who played an essential role in bringing about the English Reformation of the 16th century. British actor Mark Rylance (The Other Boleyn Girl) portrays this historical figure, who is described in Mantel's novels as manipulative and opportunistic.

Rylance will co-star with Damian Lewis, who -- after playing a US Marine accused of terrorism in Homeland -- portrays the Tudor-era monarch known for being married six times over his lifetime. His second wife, Anne Boleyn, is played by British actress Claire Foy (Crossbones).

The title Wolf Hall comes from the first book in Hilary Mantel's trilogy, which explores Thomas Cromwell's formative years and political ascension. The mini-series will also draw on material from the second book, Bring up the Bodies, published in 2012, and from the forthcoming third book, The Mirror and the Light.
