Harcore law-dispensing policeman Judge Dredd, an iconic comic book character with 40 years of history behind him, is being prepared for a TV debut in Judge Dredd: Mega-City One.
First stepping into comic book history in a 1977 issue of British sci-fi weekly 2000 AD, Judge Dredd was introduced as a genetically enhanced super cop licensed to pursue, arrest, judge and, if necessary, execute criminals in one fell swoop.
His brutal, hardline approach was a reaction to the political and cultural climate of the time and there are signs that the series could take a similar approach in this new adaptation.
Towering city blocks, devious crime lords, grossly unhealthy, unhappy and unhinged citizens, and a contingent of roving Judges typify life inside the future Earth’s Mega-Cities, bastions of refuge from an irradiated wasteland that covers most of the planet after a disastrous nuclear war.
But the dystopian setting still allowed for the creation of memorable characters and even farcical situations as Dredd and his 22nd-century cohorts chased perpetrators from city streets to desert compounds and even to the moon and back.

{{/usCountry}}The Dredd universe “seems to only become and more relevant with age,” said Mark Stern, one of four executive producers attached to the project. “Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell!” he told Entertainment Weekly.
Stern is associated with TV’s Defiance, Helix and Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate: Atlantis. The CEO of distributor IM Global Stuart Ford is also an exec, as are brothers Chris and Jason Kingsley; the Kingsleys are co-founders of video game developer Rebellion, now well known for the Sniper Elite franchise, which also currently publishes 2000 AD; both the Kinglseys and Ford are all returning from 2012’s cinematic adaptation Dredd.
“We want to make it as gritty as we can, just like the Dredd movie,” said producer Brian Jenkins in a short video announcing the show. “We also want to add in elements from the comic book -- the craziness, the levity and the excitement,” explained Jason Kingsley.
