KBC 8 takes on racial discrimination, communal discord

Amitabh Bachchan's Kaun Banega Crorepati 8's producers have hit the nail on its head: by talking of racial discrimination and religious intolerance in their promos.

If you thought there is nothing more to general entertainment on Indian television than puppy college romance or melodrama, think again. Amitabh Bachchan's KBC 8, starting on Sony, joins an elite club of TV shows raising social awareness in India. Two promos of KBC 8, released recently, have generated a lot of interest among the audience since their plots revolve around racial discrimination and communal discord. The first promo, just over a minute long, deals with racial discrimination. The video shows a contestant going for the 'audience poll' option when asked if Kohima was a part of India. Amitabh Bachchan, the host, announces that everybody in the audience had opted for Kohima being a part of India, and adds: 'Yeh to sab jaante hain'.



To this, the contestant retorts: "Jaante to sab hain, magar maante kitne hain?"

In a similar vein, the second promo shows a Hindu family from a small town mohalla getting ready to send their son to KBC. The next frame shows their disgruntled next-door neighbours, a Muslim family, who are obviously not happy with the turn of events.

The KBC promos are indeed commendable and couldn't have come at a better time, considering the increasing incidents of religious intolerance and racial discrimination in our cities.

Will KBC 8 promos help change the society? Will they help change us? Changes like this can't be drastic but the promos are a way forward.
