After producing, Ugly Betty, for ABC, Salma Hayek will pick up another TV producing credit, this time on an updated version of the classic Western series, The Cisco Kid, for CBS.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series will focus on Cisco, a former Marine who returns to Los Angeles for his father's funeral. He quickly learns that his dad was none other than the legendary Cisco Kid, known for coming to the rescue of the oppressed and the defenseless. Along with his best friend Dan, Cisco decides to continue his father's crusade for justice.
The Cisco Kid was created by O. Henry in his 1907 story, The Caballero's Way, which described the protagonist as a charismatic outlaw from south of the US border. The character featured in dozens of films and TV movies between 1914 and 1994 and has also inspired radio programs, comics and an American TV series produced in the 1950s.
Salma Hayek began developing the project last year alongside fellow producer Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men). Now that CBS has given the green light, the screenplays for the series will be penned by Chad Damiani and J.P. Lavin, who will also serve as supervising producers.
