Popular as Tulsi Virani from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Smriti Irani has ruled the hearts of television viewers. Then she got busy with her political career and other commitments. Now Smriti returns to TV as the host of a crime show Life Ok’s Savadhan India and talks to us about the experience.
It’s been two years since your last show Maniben.com. How does it feel being back on TV?
I have always been around. I was acting in projects in various media – be it my play Bal Gopal, Telugu film Jai Bolo Telangana or Bengali film Amrita. For me, Savadhan India is a new adventure as it’s a new concept. I don’t want to sound clichéd, but I was waiting for something different from what I had done earlier.
Why did you choose to be part of Savadhan India?
Because the show will focus on crimes in Delhi and as I am from there, the concept clicked with me. I will be hosting eight episodes. I think what is distinct about the show is that in addition to highlighting the crime, it also tries to give a solution and says what you can do to fight back.

Nowadays I meet people who get nostalgic and tell me they were in class ten when my show was on air. It is quite sweet and Life Ok is part of the Star family, so it’s a sort of homecoming for me.

Your contemporary Sakshi Tanwar, too has reinvented herself and is doing well in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.
I haven’t had the opportunity to watch the show because of my crazy schedule. But I have seen Sakshi and Ram’s (Kapoor) Yamuna Express highway ad and it feels great to see all my colleagues, including Sakshi, Ram, Ronit (Roy) etc on TV. It only goes to prove that talent is always appreciated.
What do you think of the current shows on TV?
Television has always been about good scripts, production values and actors. When these three work together, nothing can stop your show. Like you asked me about my comeback earlier, I feel that it is for stars, actors never go out of style. I have had the distinct privilege of being both.
