There’s been a sudden eruption of so-called feminist voices: Iqbal Khan

The TV actor believes that both men and women should be treated equally, but one doesn’t need to be pulled down to make the other feel empowered.

Iqbal Khan strongly believes in gender equality. But the television actor feels that nowadays, many people often indulge in male-bashing in the name of feminism.

TV actor Iqbal Khan says, “Men and women should be equal. But there are people who put men down to prove that women are better, and that isn’t cool. Male bashing has become a fad, and I don’t think it needs to be that way.”

“I feel things have changed in India... and it is not an ideal situation. I want to specify that there is a sudden eruption of so-called feminist voices [in the country],” he says, adding, “Men and women should be equal. But there are people who put men down to prove that women are better, and that isn’t cool. Male bashing has become a fad, and I don’t think it needs to be that way.”

The 35-year-old feels that establishing gender equality will take time in a country like ours.

Talking about the anti-men wave that he feels is on the rise in the country, the Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai actor says, “If you meet 10 people in a week, at least three of them will be criticising men, saying, ‘Men are dogs, etc.’ Or maybe, only I come across such people.”

The 35-year-old feels that establishing gender equality will take time in a country like ours. “Anything is possible, but it might take time,” he says, adding, “But with the way things are going right now, I feel we will soon have to start supporting male empowerment. Indian culture needs to be moulded in a particular way, if both the genders are to be treated equally.”

Interestingly, Iqbal’s new TV show focuses on the subject of the girl child. “In the show, we are talking about people’s obsession with having a male child. I have a daughter, so I want such issues to be talked about. I hope the show creates awareness in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, where this issue may be more prevalent,” he says.
