After dabbling in reality shows ranging from comedy, cooking and song and dance, Star Plus is now gearing up for the desi version of the popular reality show, Survivor. The show, to be produced by Miditech, is expected to go on air towards the second half of this year, shortly after the fourth season of the Indian Premier League wraps up.
Lately, several TV and Bollywood actors have been making rounds of the production company’s office to audition as the show’s contestants and hosts. No names are confirmed yet. Niret Alva, executive chairman, Miditech, confirms the news, but refuses to divulge any details: “We have licensed the format from the original producers for India. It’s in the pre-production stages. Once we’re ready with the names of our contestants and anchors, we’ll definitely announce them,” he says.
However, Monica Sheirgill, senior creative director, Star Plus, confirms that the show is for her channel and its casting is in process: “It’s the granddaddy of all reality shows. I can proudly say that it’s being produced for my channel. We’re looking for the right mix of contestants and a fabulous host right now.”
Miditech and Strix Television AB signed a production and licensing agreement, whereby Miditech would have exclusive Indian licensing and production rights to the entire format catalogue in India. The Indian remake of Survivor has not been titled yet. The show is about being able to survive tough physical and psychological challenges on an island for about 47 days. Each episode votes out one participant and the winner gets the prize money. The complex social interplay between the diverse competitors, who often have to cooperate with each other, has captured the imagination of audiences worldwide.
The format, originally credited to Charlie Parsons, who co-owns Castaway Television Production in the UK with Waheed Alli and Bob Geldof, has already been remade in more than two-dozen nations including Argentina, Australia, couple of countries in Europe, Pakistan and Russia. The Indian remake is expected to go on the floors soon.
