Updated on Dec 10, 2015 04:35 pm IST

An abandoned ashram in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand which once hosted The Beatles was on Tuesday reopened to the public. The iconic spiritual retreat where the band learnt to meditate has been renovated by the Uttarakhand state government to attract more tourists and Beatles fans.

The band visited the ashram in 1968 when it was run by the Indian spiritual guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi , known for his transcendental meditation and yoga. The band is reported to have written many songs during their stay in the ashram.

The retreat was later taken over by the state forest department and has now been turned into an eco-friendly tourist destination, offering nature walks and bird watching.
