Four hours of debate in the Lok Sabha, a walkout by opposition parties and the revised Triple Talaq Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha. The bill essentially criminalizes the practice of Muslim men instantly divorcing their wives by uttering “Talaq” thrice. It provides for a three-year jail term for those found guilty of following the practice. Opposition parties including the Congress and AIADMK staged a walk out expressing reservations over the Bill. They demanded that the Bill be sent to a select committee for greater scrutiny as several provisions were “unconstitutional”. The bill will now be taken up in the Rajya Sabha where it had got stalled the last time.
