Ravi Shankar Prasad tables Triple Talaq bill in Rajya Sabha
Updated on Feb 26, 2020 02:10 pm IST
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tabled the Triple Talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The bill, which criminalises instant divorce by Muslim men, was earlier passed in the Lok Sabha. “This is a matter of gender justice, dignity and equality,” the law minister said while tabling the bill. The bill was passed by the 16th Lok Sabha but could not pass the Rajya Sabha hurdle then.
The bill, which seeks jail term for the guilty, was the first draft legislation tabled by the Narendra Modi government in this first session after it took oath of office for a second term in May.
