On December 17, five officials were suspended from a prison in Chhattisgarh pending an inquiry into a jailbreak that happened a day earlier. At least 299 prisoners, including 105 Maoist insurgents, escaped from a central Indian jail after overpowering guards on Sunday, December 16. The Maoists held in the jail in Chhattisgarh state overpowered the guards, broke open the prison locks and freed some other prisoners too. They fled amidst a haze of gunfire.
