30 years later, remembering Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984

A gas leak from the Union Carbide Plant in Bhopal on the intervening night of December 2-3 in 1984 led to the death of at least 2,000 people instantly. Birds, stray dogs and cattle lay dead on the streets of Bhopal. The extremely hazardous gas had also left the surrounding land, lake and vegetation polluted with a toxic cocktail of chemicals.In a 1994 report, the state-run Indian Council of Medical Research put the toll at 25,000. 30 years on, the fight for justice still rages in Bhopal. And, with the recent death of Union Carbide's former boss and the failure to secure more compensation means that prospects for the victims look grim.
