Updated on Apr 02, 2010 10:08 pm IST
Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi on Thursday said that the mammoth countrywide census 2011 would help check the influx of illegal immigrants into the state. India on Thursday began what it claims to be the largest census exercise ever anywhere across the world. The census, undertaken at the start of every decade, will also be the databank for building the National Population Register (NPR), based on biometric information and photos of all residents above 15 years old.
