India helping Tamils in Lanka: Nirupama assures Karunanidhi

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao on Wednesday assured Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on the issue of rehabilitation of Tamils in Sri Lanka and assured him that the central government has accelerated the work for restoring their livelihood. She added that a top official of the central government would be visiting Sri Lanka soon to assess the development needs in the conflict-ridden areas. Rao said that India has a very extensive programme of assistance for the people of northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka through the development of basic facilities like schools, hospitals, providing shelter and building material.
