The rare species of Manipuri pony, though small in size but known for toughness, swiftness and strength in polo, is facing extinction in Manipur. Once owned by every household in Manipur, today their number has plummeted to below 1,000. General Secretary of Manipur Equestrian said that lack of adequate facilities and financial assistance for the conservation and preservation of the ponies has contributed to the extinction of the rare species.
