Muslims observe the Islamic New Year in Mumbai

Muslims in Mumbai observed the first day of the Holy month of Muharram on Tuesday. Moharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Devotees offered prayers for peace on the day that marks the beginning of a new Islamic year, 1430 Hijri. The tenth day of the first month of the Islamic calendar is observed as the Islamic day of mourning or Muharram, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Mohammad.
