Updated on Jan 05, 2011 08:57 pm IST

Bharatiya Janata Party, on Tuesday emerged as a major gainer in the rural civic body polls by wresting 12 of the 30 Zilla Panchayats. The state's main opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) captured four Zilla Panchayats each while the remaining 10 saw hung verdicts. Karnataka Chief BS Yeddyurappa was quick to hail victory. The result is seen as big boost for the state chief's political career amid relentless campaign by the opposition to remove him from the top post for his alleged role in a land scam.
