Updated on Jun 16, 2008 08:22 pm IST
Sericulture has emerged as a means of empowering rural women in Tripura. The various government schemes for sericulture are in operation in the state. Sericulture involves growing of mulberry trees, rearing of silk worms and spinning of cocoon for the silk thread. Women entrepreneurs have been given special preference under the schemes and tribals are also involved to provide them an alternative to Jhum cultivation.
