The plight of Baloch women

Updated on Dec 06, 2010 09:12 pm IST

In March 2010, the European Organization of Pakistani Minorities, an NGO, expressed concern over the plight of Baloch women in Balochistan as army officials were taking them to torture cells, raping them and using them as sex slaves. One such tragic case was that of Zarina Mari, a 23-year-old schoolteacher from Quetta who was abducted and tortured by Pakistani army in 2005. There are many Baloch women like Zarina Mari, who continue to fall victims of prolonged volatility and aggression in Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province where currently a liberation movement is underway. Pakistani forces are on a rampage and even target innocent women and children while carrying out raids on their houses. In a state where protectors have become predators, civilized society has ceased to exist.
