Rahul Gandhi’s resignation rejected by Congress’ top decision-making body

Updated on May 25, 2019 10:26 pm IST

Days after the Indian National Congress party's humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, party chief Rahul Gandhi offered to resign from his post. However, the party's top decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee, rejected the resignation, appealing to him to continue to provide his leadership to the party in challenging times. Multiple chiefs of Congress' state units have so far tendered their resignations, taking responsibility for the party's drubbing. The Congress only won 52 seats in the 543-member Lower House of Parliament, and might not be able to secure the Leader of Opposition position for the second term in a row.
