Afghans in India seek refugee status, UNHCR says neighbours must keep doors open

- Afghan nationals continued their protest outside the UNHCR office in Delhi's Vasant Vihar. Desperate and fearful protesters demanded refugee status for Afghans and resettlement options in a third country. Many of these Afghan women, children and elderly fled the country years ago to escape the Taliban. With the Taliban back in power in Afghanistan now, many of them face a bleak and desperate future. The Taliban declared the end of a two-decade war in Afghanistan last week amid departure of US troops. On August 15, the Taliban swept into Kabul amid departure of US troops from Afghanistan. Since the Taliban takeover, Afghans have been scrambling to get out of the war-torn nation. Meanwhile, UNHCR has responded to the increasing number of Afghan nationals demanding refugee status.
