Tensions escalated in Shillong after violence erupted over the death of Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) ex-militant, Cherish Starfield Thangkhiew. Surrendered militant Cherish Starfield Thangkhiew was killed during a police raid in his home. DGP R. Chandranathan said Thangkhiew attacked police with a knife, leading to retaliatory shooting. On August 15, Meghalaya home minister resigned over the police shooting of Thangkhiew. Lahkmen Rymbui’s decision came after vandalism and arson rocked Shillong city. Violence erupted in several areas following which a curfew was imposed in the city. Mobile internet was also stopped for 48 hours, beginning at 6 pm on August 15. Watch the full video for more.
