- Modi govt warns restaurants for 'harassing customers' to pay service charge. Citing the guidelines issued in 2017, Centre asked eateries not to force customers to pay service charge as it is voluntary & not mandatory, In a letter to National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) , the consumer affairs ministry has said such practice impacts consumers at large on a daily basis and has significant ramifications on the rights of consumers. The ministry has scheduled a meeting on June 2 to discuss and decide on appropriate action against such illegal trade practices by restaurants.
