Vaishno Devi stampede: At least 12 killed; PM announces ex-gratia, probe ordered

At least 12 killed and injured in a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in J&K’s Katra on Saturday. As per a PTI report, the stampede was triggered by a heavy rush of devotees on the first day of the New Year. The yatra (pilgrimage) to the holy shrine has been suspended after the incident. PM Modi expressed grief at the incident and announced an ex-gratia for the families of those killed. J&K L-G Manoj Sinha's office announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh for the next of kin of those killed. Sinha’s office also shared helpline numbers of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Sinha informed that Home Minister Amit Shah was briefed & a high-level inquiry has been ordered. Watch the full video for more.
