Art stolen by Nazis goes on display in Berlin museum

It was a story that spread around the world. In 2012, the authorities in Germany discovered almost 1500 artworks in an unassuming flat in Munich. Later the police also found around 60 artworks in a house in Salzburg. The owner of the homes was Cornelius Gurlitt, the son of the “art dealer of the Nazis” Hildebrand Gurlitt. Immediately there was a suspicion that some of the works, or perhaps even all, had been stolen from Jewish families during the Nazi era. When Cornelius Gurlitt died in 2014 his will bequeathed the works to the Art Museum of Bern in Switzerland.
