Vietnam’s spiritual possession ritual, Hau Dong, gets resurrected
Previously frowned on by the ruling Communist Party, the ancient ritual of Hau Dong is enjoying a revival in Vietnam. Spirit mediums dance to loud folk music while appearing to transform themselves into different characters. They display changing personalities as if spirits have entered their bodies. Hau Dong dates back to the 16th century and its status was reaffirmed in 2016 when it gained recognition by UNESCO.
