Canada has agreed to sharply cut its 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced after high-level talks in Beijing. In return, China will significantly lower tariffs on key Canadian farm exports, including slashing duties on canola seeds from about 84% to 15%. Under the deal, Chinese EV exports to Canada will be capped at 49,000 vehicles initially, rising to 70,000 over five years. Carney said the agreement reflects a renewed, pragmatic relationship with China and makes ties more predictable at a time of global trade disruption driven by U.S. President Donald Trump’s America-first policies.
